Senate Candidate Pushes Impeachment for Supreme Court Justices

Senate hopeful Graham Platner is calling for the impeachment of at least two Supreme Court justices, arguing that a Democratic majority in November should leverage its oversight power to address what he describes as an ethics crisis within the nation's highest court.

Platner, a 41-year-old Marine-turned-oyster farmer, contends that the current 6-3 conservative majority acts as a political barrier to legislative progress. While addressing supporters this weekend, he argued that the Senate possesses the necessary structural authority to enforce stricter standards on the bench. He specifically noted that if Supreme Court justices were held to the same ethics requirements as lower federal judges—which include mandatory financial disclosures and recusal from conflicted cases—there would be a clear path for the removal of multiple members.

Public skepticism regarding the court has intensified following revelations of undisclosed luxury gifts and ties between justices and political donors. Investigations have linked Justice Clarence Thomas to significant financial support from billionaire Harlan Crow, while Justice Samuel Alito faced scrutiny over a luxury trip involving hedge fund tycoon Paul Singer and reports of partisan symbols displayed at his residence. In addition to impeachment, Platner advocates for expanding the size of the court, a move he claims is essential for Democrats to overcome the current judicial deadlock.
