Threads hits 500 million users as it rolls out algorithm controls

Three years after its debut as a rival to X, Meta’s Threads has reached 500 million monthly active users. To sustain this momentum, the platform is launching "Your Algo," a private tool allowing users to curate their feeds without the public posts previously required to influence content discovery.

The "Your Algo" feature serves as a private evolution of the earlier "Dear Algo" tool, which forced users to broadcast their preferences publicly. Now, individuals in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, and New Zealand can manually adjust feed topics for durations of one, three, or seven days. This granular control aims to differentiate Threads from competitors by offering a more personalized content experience.

Beyond feed management, Meta is pushing its "Communities" feature out of beta. A new "Communities Hub" is designed to solve discoverability issues, helping users find niche groups focused on interests ranging from literature to K-pop. Instagram head Connor Hayes noted that the goal is to foster a more purposeful experience, as data shows users remain more engaged when they quickly connect with like-minded groups.

To challenge the real-time dominance of X, Threads is also expanding "Live Chats" to more communities. These spaces provide a second-screen experience for cultural events, allowing for simultaneous commentary. With the platform adding 100 million monthly users in just the last 10 months, these updates signal a shift from basic feature parity to offering unique tools that prioritize user agency over the algorithmic noise found on rival platforms.
