EU leaders to debate envoy role for Ukraine peace talks

At an informal summit in Dublin on 13 November, EU leaders are due to discuss who could represent them in potential high-level Ukraine peace talks. The agenda follows an exchange of letters in which Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warned of disarray among Europe’s diplomatic formats on the war.

The discussion will focus on the role’s “profile, format, and mandate,” an EU source said. Proposals on specific candidates will be left for a later date.

Meloni told European Council President António Costa that she was “not asking for this role for myself or for Italy”. She did not, however, rule herself out. Some commentators doubt Russia is interested in any “big, beautiful deal”.
