Exxon and Chevron Executives Skip ADIPEC Amid Regional Tensions

Security concerns have prompted ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods and Chevron upstream president Clay Neff to cancel their attendance at next week's ADIPEC conference in Abu Dhabi. While the event remains a cornerstone of the global energy calendar, the withdrawal of these high-profile leaders signals growing industry anxiety over potential regional instability.

The cancellations coincide with Washington’s deliberations regarding potential military action against Iran. Although President Donald Trump previously indicated the United States would refrain from strikes before the November 3 midterm elections, the ambiguity surrounding the post-election period has unnerved corporate planners. The conference schedule, which runs through November 5, falls directly into this window of uncertainty.

Recent Houthi strikes against Riyadh’s international airport and Saudi Aramco headquarters have heightened the regional risk profile. The U.S. State Department recently ordered a partial departure of American diplomatic staff from Saudi Arabia, following a pattern of disruption that previously forced the postponement of the kingdom’s Future Investment Initiative. While ADIPEC organizers anticipate record participation with 240,000 attendees from over 170 countries, the absence of major American oil executives highlights a deepening wariness. Other industry leaders, including BP CEO Meg O’Neill and Equinor CEO Anders Opedal, remain on the schedule, but the departure of figures like Caturus chairman Ben Dell underscores a shift in executive risk tolerance.
