MSF: Israel’s Blockade of Vital Supplies in Gaza is Designed to Attrition

A policy of attrition by design is how Doctors Without Borders (MSF) describes the Israeli government’s ongoing restriction of engine oil and generator parts entering Gaza. Humanitarian teams report that these shortages are crippling hospitals, water transport, and food production, rendering the survival of the civilian population increasingly untenable.

Gaza’s healthcare system currently relies almost entirely on generators, as most electrical infrastructure has been destroyed and grid power remains severed. MSF officials report that some medical facilities hold less than a month’s supply of engine oil, forcing teams to source the fuel locally at inflated costs. Filipe Ribeiro, the organization's head of mission in Palestine, argues that these restrictions are not bureaucratic accidents but a calculated effort to dismantle the systems necessary for human survival.

The obstruction extends beyond medical needs, threatening the distribution of water and the operation of bakeries and flour mills. According to MSF, the denial of basic goods—ranging from skin ointments to rubber seals for sterilization equipment—reflects a broader pattern of structural violence. These findings arrive as UN experts condemn recent military strikes on shelters and humanitarian staff, noting that the ongoing blockade continues to strip the territory of its most essential resources.
