Modern military robotics often evoke science-fiction imagery of autonomous combatants, yet the current reality is defined by limited, task-specific automation. According to Ondřej Rosendorf, a researcher at the University of Hamburg, the distinction lies in the role of the operator. While systems like FPV kamikaze drones employ 'last-mile autonomy' to lock onto targets during the final seconds of flight, the ultimate decision to engage remains firmly in human hands. Systems that select, track, and neutralize targets entirely without oversight—often classified as fully autonomous weapons—are not currently operational on the front lines.
Ukraine’s ground robots: The reality of battlefield automation
While Ukraine aims to deploy 50,000 ground robots by year-end, the reality of robotic warfare remains tethered to human command. Despite claims of autonomous defensive capabilities, security expert Ondřej Rosendorf warns that ground-based machines still struggle with terrain, leaving aerial drones as the primary force multiplier in the ongoing conflict.
Ground robots have become a centerpiece of Ukrainian military innovation, primarily for logistics, demining, and casualty evacuation. However, Rosendorf suggests that their strategic impact is often overstated due to wartime messaging. Unlike the millions of aerial drones deployed by both sides, ground platforms face significant physical limitations when navigating complex, cratered terrain. While these machines provide essential support in high-risk zones, they are not yet capable of replacing human soldiers in combat roles. For now, the most significant innovation in the conflict remains the mass deployment of aerial systems, with ground robotics serving as a marginal, albeit useful, logistical supplement rather than a revolutionary force.
